NYT: Republicans Employ Gun Giveaways in Primary Races

The New York Times reports that Republicans are seizing on the popularity of guns and gun giveaways in primary races around the country.

The Times points to Colorado state Senator Greg Brophy’s (R) recent gun sweepstakes as a case in point.

Last month, Brophy gave away a Smith & Wesson M&P AR-15 rifle in a contest where supporters simply entered their names and email addresses online.

Brophy boasted of the quality of the rifle: “I tricked this baby out,” he said. He described it as having “extra grips, a backup sight, and a strap so it could be slung effortlessly over the shoulder.”

He said the AR-15 giveaway attracted thousands of people. “It was awesome,” he added.

The newspaper reported that from “a race for sheriff in California to the United States Senate primary in South Carolina,” Republican candidates are giving away “high-powered pistols and rifles” to show supporters their bona fides.

State Senator Lee Bright, who is challenging Senator Lindsey Graham (R) in South Carolina, “has given away two guns,” one of which was an AR-15.
