Washington Post: Martin O'Malley's 'Irresponsible' Open Invite Threatens Lives of Migrants

Even the Washington Post thinks Maryland Democrat Governor Martin O’Malley was “irresponsible in the extreme” when he said all of the illegal immigrant juveniles from Central America should not get sent back to face “certain death.”

After blasting O’Malley for his “hypocrisy” for calling out Obama on deportations while begging the White House not to send illegal immigrants to his state, the Post on Monday wrote that “by following the governor’s prescription, the United States would risk making a bad humanitarian crisis [a] good deal worse.”

“If the governor were speaking for the U.S. government – which he’s obviously not – his public statements would amount to an open invitation to Central American kids to make the trek north and cross the Rio Grande without much fear that they would be sent home,” the Post wrote. “That’s not in the U.S. interest and it’s certainly not in the kids’ own interest.”

The Post said the remarks were “also irresponsible in the extreme” because they would only lure more illegal immigrant juveniles to make the harrowing and “extremely dangerous” trip.

“Girls who make it are routinely advised to take contraception in the event they are raped. Many of the coyotes who guide the children through Mexico also prey on them,” the Post wrote. “To invite them to the United States en masse by suggesting it would be immoral for America to send them home to a ‘certain death’ is also to induce them to risk their lives.”

There have been nearly 60,000 illegal immigrant juveniles who have been apprehended since October of last year, and federal officials expect at least 150,000 more will be in the next fiscal year. The number of illegal immigrants who have been caught has drastically spiked since Obama unilaterally enacted his temporary amnesty program for certain DREAMers in 2012.

The Obama administration has been scrambling to let migrants know that they will not receive amnesty on the others side of the U.S.-Mexico border, but many are still surrendering to Border Patrol agents and asking for “permisos” that they think will allow them to live in the United States without consequences. Maryland, O’Malley’s state, also happens to be home to one of the country’s biggest sanctuary counties (Montgomery Country).
