GOP Rep. Cautions Obama Against Executive Order on Immigration

A California Republican says President Obama should call the Senate back to Washington to take action on the House-passed border bills, according to a local report

“I expect him to do the right thing. I don’t want to send any signal that we expect him to do the wrong thing,” Rep. Doug LaMalfa told Capital Press following a town hall meeting attended by about 50 residents this week.

Additionally, LaMalfa told the publication, that if President Obama moves forward with an executive order on immigration “we’re going to have problems.”

“We’re not going to fund his executive order,” he said, according to the report.

At the beginning of August, House Republicans passed a $694 million border bill aimed at confronting the ongoing crisis of unaccompanied minors illegally entering the United States through the southern border and a companion bill targeting Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

According to LaMalfa, the Senate — which failed to pass a border supplemental before it broke for August recess — should act on the legislation.

During the town hall meeting, according to Capitol Press, he pointed to the hundreds of House-passed bills waiting action from the Senate.

“The House has been doing its work in the last year and a half,” Capitol Press quoted LaMalfa. “If you don’t like what is happening, call your senators.”

Capitol Press further reported that LaMalfa said he supports immigration reform this year and that conversations with farmers convinced him of the need for more labor.

The publication noted LaMalfa added that laws on the books already must be enforced, as “there’s really no trust that the government’s going to enforce the laws that you put in place.”
