31,000 Pounds of 'Gluten-Free' Chicken Recalled

Murry’s Inc., maker of Bell & Evans gluten-free chicken breast nuggets (12 ounces) and Bell & Evans gluten-free chicken breast (10.5 ounces), have recalled the products, over 31,000 pounds worth, because of possible contamination with staph bacteria. The products being recalled had Aug. 9, 2015 expiration dates.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that the problem was found when the Colorado Department of Agriculture conducted a sampling program.

After just a few hours of being consumed, staph bacteria can cause symptoms including nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea.

Murry’s Inc. Chief Executive Officer Ira Mendelson told PBS NewsHour Weekend that none of the company’s other products were contaminated. He added, “Even having knowledge of one box being contaminated, we felt a voluntary recall would be necessary.”

The recall began Saturday; no other cases of contamination have been reported.
