Pew Poll: Americans Want Gun Rights, Not Gun Control

On December 10, PEW Research released a poll showing Americans’ are more concerned with protecting gun rights than with passing more gun control.

And this degree of focus on defending gun rights instead of “[controlling] gun ownership” has not been seen in over 20 years.

According to PEW, “52 percent” of respondents “[said] it is more important to protect the right of Americans to own guns” than to pass more controls on gun ownership. “46 percent” of respondents supported more controls.

When broken down by party affiliation, “76 percent” of Republican respondents want gun rights protected. Only “26 percent” want more controls on gun ownership. Among Independent respondents, “56 percent” wants gun rights protected, “42 percent” want more controls.

Among Democrats, only “28 percent” supported protecting gun rights while “68 percent” want more gun control.

Hispanics were the most pro-gun control demographic in the PEW poll. They supported gun control over gun rights by a nearly 3-to-1 margin. Conservative Republicans were the most pro-gun rights demographic. They supported gun rights over gun control by a margin of more than 4-to-1.
