Brad Pitt to Star in 'The Operators,' The Rise and Fall of Gen. Stanley McChrystal

Brad Pitt’s next assignment will bring him into the complex world of Afghanistan, adapting a book written by the journalist whose work cost a key U.S. general his job.

Animal Kingdom helmer David Michôd will write and direct The Operators, which will be developed as a star vehicle for Brad Pitt … Based on the Michael Hastings book, The Operators focuses on the rise and fall of Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the commanding general of international and U.S. forces in Afghanistan. It portrays the backrooms and politics behind the war, and the high-stake maneuvers and the political firestorm that shook the country.

Hastings hastened the general’s fall via his profile in Rolling Stone magazine The Runaway General. The reporter followed up the article with The Operators, a more intensive look into the behind-the-scenes war activities.

Gen. McChrystal resigned following the release of the article, which showed his staff making disparaging comments about key Obama administration figures.

Hastings, 33, died last year in a car crash.
