GLAAD to Honor 'Star Trek's' George Takei for Supporting LGBT Rights

George Takei, the Star Trek veteran who became a gay rights activist after publicly coming out, will be honored by GLAAD for his work on behalf of LGBT rights.

Takei will receive the Vito Russo Award next month at the group’s media awards event in New York, an honor previously given to Elton John, Alan Cumming, Nathan Lane and Cherry Jones.

“George has consistently used his platform to move the cultural needle on issues like marriage equality, LGBT employment protections, anti-LGBT bullying, and more,’ GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement.

The award is given to openly gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender stars who promote equality.
