Hacking Group Threatens Extortion of Sony Pictures for Inequality

A group who calls themselves the Guardians of Peace, or GOP, reportedly hacked into Sony Pictures network computers this week and has threatened to reveal all of their secrets.

Employees at Sony attempted to login onto their computers Monday morning, only to find something sinister. An image of a red skeleton creepily glaring at them had hijacked their home screens.

The picture came with a warning, via Entertainment Weekly:

“We’ve obtained all your internal data including your secrets and top secrets,” the note reads. “If you don’t obey us, we’ll release data shown below to the world.”

There is no official report indicating which data the group is referring to, or exactly what they want from Sony, but a representative from GOP told the Verge“We want equality. Sony doesn’t. It’s an upward battle.”

Additional reports from a hacker, who goes by “Lena,” revealed how the cyber-attack was carried out.

“Sony doesn’t lock their doors, physically, so we worked with other staff with similar interests to get in,” Lena wrote in an email to The Verge. “Im sorry I can’t say more, safety for our team is important [sic].”

Sony Pictures told Deadline that they “experienced a system disruption” and “are working diligently to resolve.”

The group, GOP, has no affiliation with the Republican Party.
