Ukraine Asks For UN Peacekeepers as Pro-Russians Seize Sloviansk Airport

Ukraine is falling apart and interim President Oleksandr Turchynov promised a large scale anti-terrorist operation against the pro-Russian forces in the east if they did not surrender by 9 a.m. Monday morning. When this did not happen Turchynov announced he is sending in United Nations peacekeepers.

Turchynov spoke to Secretary General Ban Ki Moon over the phone and asked for the peacekeepers to work with the Ukrainian security forces. Pro-Russian forces in Donetsk Oblast have seized over ten government buildings since Saturday. On Monday morning, a man claiming to be a Russian army lieutenant captured a police station in Horlivska.

Ban Ki Moon told Turchynov he could rely on the UN to help Ukraine.

Tweets from journalists in Ukraine show the situation worsening by the hour.
