Anti-Israel activists in South Africa placed a pig’s head in the kosher meat section of a Woolworth’s grocery story in Cape Town, rendering all of the meat inedible for Jews who keep kosher. The action by the Congress of South African Students was aimed squarely at South Africa’s Jewish community, amidst a “boycott, divestment, sanctions” (BDS) campaign to force Woolworth’s to stop selling Israeli food products, such as tomatoes.
Though South Africa’s BDS movement has since attempted to distance itself somewhat from the incident, it initially celebrated the antisemitic attack. A statement released by the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, the community’s leadership, noted that BDS-South Africa, “which is heading up the campaign to boycott Woolworths, not only failed to condemn the incident but have assisted Cosas in publicizing what it had done.”
A Twitter account affiliating itself with the African National Congress (ANC), South Africa’s ruling party, posted a photograph (above) of an activist in an ANC shirt placing the pig’s head in the grocery store.
A spokesperson for the Woolworth’s chain told South Africa’s news24.com: “Placing a pig’s head in our store is unacceptable and offensive to our employees and customers, including Jewish and Muslim employees and customers.”
