Tiger Woods Five Shots Worse than 64-Yr-Old Ryder Cup Captain Tom Watson

Tiger Woods may have come back early from back surgery to make the Ryder Cup team. And after an auspicious three-under start to this year’s British Open, Woods finished the tournament five shots worse than 64-year-old Tom Watson, who happens to be this year’s Ryder Cup captain.

The 64-year-old Watson will turn 65 next month, and he said he would be watching Woods closely in his next three tournaments to see if he is fit and sharp enough to make the squad. Since Woods has played only two tournaments since undergoing back surgery, he would have to be one of two captain’s picks to make the team barring a torrid streak in the year’s final tournaments.

Watson, who almost won the British Open at the age of 59 at Turnberry in 2009, shot a four-under 68 on Sunday to finish the tournament at +1. Woods shot at 3-over 72 on Sunday to finish the tournament at +6.

Woods said he was optimistic about representing his country at the Ryder Cup and recalled that Corey Pavin picked him to be on the team when he was coming back from surgery in 2010.

“I got picked by Corey Pavin back in whenever it was when we played in Wales (2010). I was coming off an injury as well there with my Achilles, and I sat out for most of the summer,” Woods said after his round. “And I felt like I was able to contribute to the team, and that’s all you want as a pick, you want someone who can contribute to the team, whether it’s in support or it’s in play. I did it then, and hopefully, I can actually earn my way on to this team.”
