Friday in Raleigh, Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC) was at a re-election event with Planned Parenthood officials to discuss their next steps after the defeat of the bill she and others introduced in the U.S. Senate in an attempt to override the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision.
The North Carolina Democrat, who is holding on to a slim three-point advantage over her challenger Thom Tillis, Speaker of North Carolina’s House of Representatives, was hoping to rally support of women voters who, according to recent polls, are favoring the junior senator by margins of 10 to 13 points.
However, Hagan refused to answer questions about the unaccompanied minors suffering through the unfolding humanitarian crisis on the U.S.-Mexico border, which is directly affecting women and children the most. Rape is so widespread in the trip across the border, this week Homeland Secretary Jeh Johnson said parents are giving their daughters birth control “in case they’re raped along the way.”
When a reporter asked if she would “invite the children on the border into North Carolina,” Hagan did not respond.
Hagan’s opponent Tillis has charged Hagan is “a rubber-stamp for President Obama’s failed open border policies,” pointing out on his campaign web page in 2013, “Hagan voted against a bill that would require the completion a 350-mile double-layered fence along the southern border before granting provisional legal status to illegal immigrants.”
