In a segment during the Frontline” documentary “The Rise of ISIS” that aired on PBS on Tuesday, the shortfalls of U.S. policy that led to the rogue elements rise in Iraq and Syria were revealed, including some damning remarks from former Obama administration officials.
“What happened here is that by virtue of—of the Shias not opening it up and allowing the Sunnis to participate, that they created the monster that has led to ISIS,” former Obama administration Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said.
The most indicting comment came from former U.S. ambassador to Iraq James Jeffrey on this White House’s handling of ISIS.
“The administration not only was warned by everybody back in January, it actually announced that it was going to intensify its support against ISIS with the Iraqi armed forces,” Jeffrey said. “And it did almost nothing.”
