'The Hobbit' tapestry poster previews epic Battle of the Five Armies

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 17 (UPI) —

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has debuted an epic tapestry poster.

The widescreen image previews the eponymous battle, and blends together several scenes from the film.

Smaug (voice of Benedict Cumberbatch) engulfs Esgaroth, or Lake-town, in flames on the far left, while Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) desperately clasp hands immediately to the right. Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) stand in Smaug’s lair in the Lonely Mountain, and Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly) are pictured with weapons in hand. Thranduil (Lee Pace) sits at the head of a host of elves, next to Thorin, Kili (Aidan Turner) and Fili (Dean O’Gorman) as they prepare for battle. Bilbo and Gandalf are shown with swords drawn on the far right.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey debuted in 2012, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug followed in 2013. The films are based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel, and grossed a combined $1.9 billion in theaters. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will complete the movie trilogy, and opens in theaters December 17.
